Dr. Alexander Omnov points out that chronic cystitis usually affects women, due to anatomical characteristics and changes in hormone levels.
Reasons for the prolonged treatment period for cystitis
A doctor reveals the causes of cystitis and how to prevent it.
According to him, cystitis can develop as a result of inflammation of the pelvic organs, and when there are stones in the bladder.
He says: "Infectious cystitis is associated with an excessive increase in pathogenic bacteria and is a result of poor hygiene in the perineal area and weakened immunity. A person can develop chronic cystitis due to what is called neurogenic bladder, when the emptying process is completely disrupted."
According to him, urinary stagnation and the proliferation of microorganisms subsequently lead to inflammation of the bladder walls. A similar mechanism of cystitis development accompanies benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
The doctor points out that risk factors for cystitis include: taking antibiotics, glucocorticoids, and other immunosuppressant medications; stress; hormonal imbalances; and diabetes, as these weaken the bladder wall's resistance. Alcohol abuse and smoking also disrupt blood flow to the bladder walls, contributing to the development of infection in areas with impaired blood supply.
According to him, before starting treatment, a urine sample should be sent for culture to identify the specific type of bacteria causing the infection. He recommends taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and urinary tract antiseptics to relieve pain. He emphasizes that this is merely a recommendation, and a doctor should be consulted for treatment.
He says: "After obtaining the culture results, antibiotics are prescribed: cephalosporins and macrolides. A specific diet must also be followed: drinking plenty of water and limiting salt intake."
