General surgeon Dr. Franky Mainza Zulkarnain, Sp. B, a graduate of the University of Indonesia, said that the habit of sitting for long periods while playing with a mobile phone in the toilet can increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids"Going to the toilet to defecate (BAB) is when we really want to, not waiting for the bowel movement to come out while holding our cellphone. Sometimes people do that, or they've finished defecating, but haven't finished playing with their cellphone," said Franky at a media meeting in Jakarta on Monday.
Franky said that modern lifestyles such as urinating in a sitting toilet can trigger increased pressure in the anus when straining.
High pressure will enlarge the blood vessels and trigger hemorrhoids or a condition where there is swelling or widening of the veins (varicose veins) around the anus or lower rectum.
The risk will be higher if the stool that comes out is hard due to a lack of fiber, thus requiring the body to push harder.
