South Africa: forest fires reignite near Cape Town

Firefighters are once again on a war footing near Cape Town, South Africa.

The fires ravaging the Franschhoek region, east of the city, intensified overnight, although the situation until then seemed under control. For almost a week, the flames have been progressing in this mountainous area. On Tuesday morning, a fire in the Three Streams area remained out of control.

The cause: strong gusts of wind which spread the fire towards hills covered with dense and extremely dry vegetation. On social networks, emergency services describe a critical situation. They evoke a region saturated with highly combustible materials, relentlessly fueling the flames. The presence of particularly flammable eucalyptus forests further complicates the work of the teams.

Exhausted, the firefighters nevertheless continued their fight to try to protect homes and contain the advance of the fire, while the weather conditions remained unfavorable.
