Uganda: Yoweri Museveni in the lead, Bobi Wine under house arrest

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was placed under house arrest this Friday, the day after the presidential and legislative elections in Uganda.

With about a quarter of the votes counted, the Electoral Commission said Museveni received 76.25% of the vote to Wine's 19.85%.

Thursday was a voting day particularly marked by significant technical problems:

- malfunctions of biometric machines used to confirm the identity of voters

- late delivery of ballots in many areas.

The media report numerous arrests in the ranks of Bobi Wine who denounces the Internet shutdown as a manifestation of the outgoing president's desire to muzzle the people and distort the results.

Bobi Wine, born Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi, 43, has become the symbol of an entire struggle for change in Uganda.

The former singer is to date the fiercest opponent of President Yoweri Museveni who has ruled the country for 40 years.

Coming as a liberator in 1986, the former rebel who is now 81 years old is seeking a seventh term at the head of Uganda.

But young people have taken up the cause of the young opponent who is starting to get used to intimidation during an election period.

The final results of the presidential and legislative elections will be known on Saturday at 2 a.m. GMT.
