As we age, we gradually lose some of our muscle mass, which weakens our strength and mobility, making it difficult to perform daily tasks easily and safely. So, what are the simplest ways to prevent muscle atrophy?
The results of a medical study recently published in the scientific journal Nutrients indicated that regular consumption of mineral water rich in calcium and magnesium positively affects muscle health and protects it from atrophy when a person is over fifty years old.
The study included 89 adults around the age of 60, some of whom suffered from osteoporosis accompanied by muscular dystrophy - a condition characterized by low bone density and muscle mass. The participants were divided into two groups: one group was asked to drink one liter of mineral water rich in calcium and magnesium daily for a year, while the other group consumed ordinary water that was not rich in minerals.
After six months of monitoring, scientists observed that the first group members had fewer falls associated with muscle atrophy, and their muscle mass had increased.
The effect was particularly evident in people with osteoporosis accompanied by muscle atrophy: they maintained their increased muscle mass after six months and after 12 months of drinking water rich in calcium and magnesium. However, the scientists did not observe significant changes in muscle strength or overall physical activity, suggesting that those nutrients have a specific effect on muscle mass only.
The study authors confirmed that the calcium and magnesium found in mineral water are well absorbed by the body and can form a simple additional strategy to support musculoskeletal health. Although this method does not replace physical activity to support bone and muscle health, it may be an easy and affordable way to reduce frailty and the risk of falls in the elderly.
