BWF to implement new rules and format for badminton championships starting in 2027
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has released a number of major rules and updates that will come into effect in 2027.

One of the most significant changes is the increase in the number of matches per year by almost double, which makes the world badminton competition calendar even more crowded.

This step was taken as part of BWF's efforts to bring badminton into a more modern, competitive, and sustainable era of global growth.

The changes are in line with the extension of BWF's long-term partnership with broadcast and commercial partner Infront until 2034.

In a statement on Tuesday, the BWF reiterated its commitment to redefining competition structures, enhancing commercial appeal, improving broadcast production standards, and delivering a higher-quality experience for athletes, fans, and all stakeholders.

Starting in 2027, the number of badminton matches produced for television broadcast will increase significantly, from 1,410 to around 3,000 matches.

This increase is to expand the reach of badminton and strengthen the sport's global position with increasing appeal.

The BWF is also making major updates to the structure of the BWF World Tour, which will now consist of six levels and a total of 36 tournaments.

One of the main points is the establishment of five Super 1000 tournaments, as well as the integration of Super 100 tournaments into the official World Tour series.

These changes will result in an increase in the total annual prize pool of the BWF World Tour to US$26.9 million (Rp452 billion). The BWF hopes this will significantly increase the prestige of the World Tour on a global scale.
