Veteran NBA player Chris Paul announced his retirement after a 21-season career in the United States basketball league, ranking second all-time in assists and steals.
"After more than 21 years, I'm leaving basketball. As I write this, it's hard to truly pinpoint my feelings, but most of all, I'm filled with so much joy and gratitude," Paul wrote on his personal Instagram account, as quoted from the NBA website.
Paul, now 40, is in his 21st and final season in the NBA. He was previously traded to the Toronto Raptors at the trade deadline, and according to several reports, the Raptors released him.
The situation has given rise to speculation as to whether the Wake Forest legend will join another team in pursuit of the NBA title he has never won.
"My chapter as an NBA player is over, but the game of basketball will forever be embedded in the DNA of my life," said Paul.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Paul's contributions on and off the court, calling him one of the greatest point guards in NBA history.
