Iran - US: Resumption of indirect talks on Tehran's nuclear program

Iran and the United States held indirect talks on Tehran's nuclear program in Oman on Friday, several months after the United States bombed Iranian uranium enrichment sites and just weeks after nationwide protests that rocked the Islamic Republic.

"Overall, I can say that it was a good start, but the continuation of this process will depend on the consultations held in the capitals and the decisions taken there. An agreement has been reached to continue negotiations, but the timetable and modalities will be determined after further consultations led by Mr. (Badr) al-Busaidi, the Omani Foreign Minister, God willing," said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Mr. Araghchi and the Omanis both said the talks were solely aimed at finding a way to arrange future negotiations , which appears to mark a return to square one of the discussions on Iran's nuclear program that took place over several months a year ago, before Israel launched its 12-day war against Iran in June.

“If the other side continues the current process and maintains the same approach, we can reach a framework for negotiations and the topics to be addressed at future meetings. I don’t want to make a judgment at this point, but I think it was a good start and that it can continue well, but that depends on the other side and also on the decisions that will be made in Tehran.” The Iranian foreign minister believes that the indirect talks between the United States and Iran in Oman were a “good start,” he added .

The American side , represented by US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, made no immediate comment on the discussions.
