Lavrov: Russia is not imposing itself as a mediator in the Middle East

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that Moscow is ready to contribute to reducing renewed tensions in the Middle East, but is not imposing itself as a mediator on either Israel, Iran, or the United States.

This came in statements made by Lavrov to RT journalist Rick Sanchez, as Diplomats' Day, which is celebrated in Russia on February 10th each year, approaches.

Lavrov said: "The Iranians, the Israelis, and the Americans know that we are ready to offer our services that can contribute to the implementation of agreements, when – which we hope – they are reached."

Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that a "huge fleet" was heading towards Iran, and expressed his hope that Tehran would agree to a "fair and just" agreement that included its complete abandonment of nuclear weapons.

Trump reminded everyone that the United States launched an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2015 as part of Operation Midnight Hammer, warning that "the next attack will be much more severe," and called for "preventing it from happening."

Lavrov stressed that Russia is interested in what is happening around Iran, which he described as "our neighbor and close partner".

He pointed out that the current escalation between the United States and Iran threatens an explosion in the entire Middle East region, and said: “It must be taken into account that this situation threatens a possible explosion not only for Iran itself, but for the entire Middle East. There are many mines ready to explode that are just waiting for someone to step on them.”
