Meta smart glasses are reportedly going to be equipped with facial recognition features
Meta plans to add facial recognition features to its smart glasses products as early as this year, according to a report by The New York Times .

According to a TechCrunch release on Friday (13/2), the feature, which is internally called “ Name Tag ,” will allow smartglasses users to identify people and obtain information about them through Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI) assistant .

However, The New York Times report states that Meta's plans regarding adding facial recognition features to the smart glasses are still subject to change.

Meta has been considering how to roll out the feature since last year, which it has deemed to pose safety and privacy risks.

According to an internal company memo, Meta originally planned to release " Name Tags " for visually impaired conference attendees before launching the feature to the public, but those plans never materialized.

The document states that Meta sees the political dynamics in the United States as the right momentum to launch the feature.

"We will be launching in a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that would normally criticize us are focusing their resources on other issues," the document states.
