Dr. Olga Chystik, a gastroenterologist at the Scandinavian Health Center in Moscow, warned that eating onions can be dangerous for people with certain

The doctor told the Russian news agency Novosti that people with high blood pressure, asthma, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and heart rhythm disorders should avoid eating onions, as they may raise blood pressure.

She added: “People with gastritis, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, kidney and heart disease should also limit their onion consumption, as it contains substances that increase stomach sensitivity and cause gases that affect the intestines and lead to bloating, which puts pressure on the diaphragm, heart and lungs.”

Despite these warnings for the aforementioned groups, onions are considered one of the most beneficial vegetables for health. Numerous studies indicate that the flavonoids they contain improve insulin sensitivity in cells, helping the body use glucose more efficiently and reducing the risk of developing diabetes.

Health experts also confirm that onions are essential for strengthening the immune system and improving iron absorption. They contribute to collagen production, which is responsible for healthy hair and the elasticity of blood vessels, cartilage, and tendons. Onions are also rich in quercetin , an antioxidant that strengthens capillaries, and their consumption has been observed to help prevent blood clots in those recovering from COVID-19.
