Dr. Stanislav Rabotinsky, a blood transfusion specialist, stated that many people believe that a high level of hemoglobin is beneficial because it gives them extra energy.
The doctor explained that high hemoglobin levels pose a significant risk to blood vessels and the heart, and that this should not be ignored, especially among non-athletes or those not living in mountainous areas.
He added that elevated hemoglobin levels necessitate a comprehensive examination, which, according to the treating physician, includes:
The hematocrit test determines the ratio of red blood cells to plasma, and it is a basic test;
Erythropoietin test , if necessary;
Ultrasound imaging of the kidneys;
Consult a hematologist, cardiologist, or pulmonologist depending on the case.
He warned against taking blood thinners such as aspirin or similar drugs except with a medical prescription.
The doctor also recommended lifestyle modifications to reduce high hemoglobin levels, including:
Drink enough water (if there is no medical contraindication);
Following a healthy diet that contains less red meat, liver, buckwheat and fatty foods, while increasing the intake of vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry and vegetable oils;
Quitting smoking and alcohol;
Engage in regular and moderate physical activity, and avoid excessive exertion.
