Many people drive their cars daily in incorrect sitting positions that can greatly strain the back and neck.
In this regard, Josh Newsome, a chiropractor at Ancoats Clinic, revealed 4 common driving postures that negatively affect the body, along with simple tips for correcting them and driving healthily.
The driver sits with raised shoulders and a tight grip on the steering wheel, causing constant tension in the neck, shoulders, and arms.
Newsom said: "Over time, this tension leads to muscle strain and stiffness, especially in traffic jams where the body doesn't fully relax."
This includes tilting the seat backwards excessively with a tilt to one side.
Newsom adds: "You may feel relief temporarily, but one side of the body is taking more strain, increasing the pressure on the lower back and hips during long journeys."
The driver sits back with arms and legs extended, mimicking the style of racing drivers.
Newsom explained: "This reduces the body's ability to absorb shocks and increases pressure on the shoulders, hips, and lower back, especially in traffic jams."
This involves sitting very close to the steering wheel with a hunched back.
Newsom noted: "This posture causes constant strain on the neck and upper spine, and is a major cause of muscle stiffness in daily motorists."
The ideal driving position is called "Professional." This position includes:
Sit upright with your hips slightly raised above your knees.
Bend your elbows gently.
Resting the head on the headrest.
Newsom's tips for healthy driving: "Let the seat support your body, maintain a natural sitting posture, and avoid forcing yourself into certain positions. Simple changes can significantly reduce stress and make daily commutes more comfortable."
