Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid emphasized that global digital platforms operating in Indonesia are required to comply with national laws and ensure that their algorithms and policies do not harm the Indonesian people.
With the number of internet users reaching around 229 million people, Meutya stated that Indonesia is not just a market, but a legal jurisdiction that must be respected.
"The internet is indeed limitless. But when platforms take traffic and profits from Indonesia, they are obliged to comply with Indonesian law," he emphasized at the Indonesian National Police Leadership Meeting in East Jakarta on Wednesday.
Meutya revealed that the government had removed pornographic content from the Grok feature on platform X for violating regulations. Indonesia was the first country to take such action.
A few days after the closure, regional and global representatives of the platform came to Indonesia and agreed on changes to the algorithm and the implementation of geotagging specifically for Indonesia.
