A former German chancellor questions the ability of the United States and Israel to defeat Iran

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder expressed doubt about the ability of the United States and Israel to achieve victory in the war that the American and Israeli armies have waged against Iran.

"I consider what the Americans and Israelis are doing there (in Iran) to be hopeless and not going to achieve the desired result," Schröder said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung. "This war was essentially launched for ideological reasons, and it cannot really be won."

The former German chancellor admitted that the events surrounding Iran strongly reminded him of the Vietnam War.

Schroeder also pointed out that the United States and Israel had not properly assessed the strength of the Iranian resistance.

In assessing the current actions of the German government in light of escalating tensions in the Middle East, Schröder emphasized that he supports the decision to refrain from direct intervention in the conflict.

In response to a question about whether Germany should participate in a possible military mission to open the Strait of Hormuz, he continued: "This should not be done under any circumstances."

Earlier, US President Donald Trump called on several countries, including Germany, to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the resumption of navigation. Berlin rejected Trump's request. Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that EU member states were not prepared to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz.

On February 28, the United States and Israel began bombing targets in Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran retaliated by launching attacks on Israeli territory, as well as on U.S. military targets in the Middle East.
