The United States government is preparing new regulations that could tighten exports of artificial intelligence (AI) chips from the country, by requiring government approval for shipments of AI chips abroad.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Friday, the United States government has drafted a rule that would require companies to obtain government approval before exporting AI chips to other countries. If implemented, this policy would give the government significantly greater control over semiconductor companies like AMD and Nvidia.
A spokesperson for the United States Department of Commerce said the department is committed to ensuring that US technology exports are conducted securely.
“We have successfully boosted exports through historic agreements with Middle Eastern countries, and there are ongoing internal discussions within the government to formalize that approach,” a Commerce Department spokesperson said.
