Antonio Conte is open to returning to coach the Italian national team

Napoli coach Antonio Conte is open to returning to coach the Italian national team, which recently failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time since its failure in the 2018 edition.

"If I were the FIGC president, I would consider myself," Conte said after leading Napoli to a 1-0 victory over AC Milan at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium early Tuesday, as quoted by Football Italia.

The 56-year-old has emerged as one of the leading contenders to take over the Azzurri, who failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after being knocked out by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-offs.

If he does end up becoming Italy coach, it would be a comeback for Conte, as he previously managed the Azzurri from 2014 to 2016, before leaving to seek new club experience with Chelsea.

During that time, Conte led Italy to 25 matches, winning 14. His last tournament was Euro 2016, where Italy reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Germany.
