Broadway: "Proof" returns with Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle

The Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony Award-winning cult classic "Proof" makes its highly anticipated return to Broadway in a new production starring Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle, both making their Broadway debuts. The production is directed by Thomas Kail, the award-winning director of "Hamilton."

The play tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of a renowned mathematician, who, after her father's death, discovers a notebook containing a revolutionary mathematical proof. The work explores themes of family legacy, mental fragility, and the transmission of knowledge. Alternating between the present and flashbacks, the play draws us into the complexities of mental health, subtly highlighting the role of caregivers.

“I was really surprised by how this story resonated with me in a completely new way. I didn’t expect to be so moved. The play reveals itself from a new angle, at once fresh, intense and demanding,” says Ayo Edebiri.

Don Cheadle emphasizes the contemporary relevance of this revival: "It allows us to explore the genius, mental health, and hardships this family faces through the eyes of a Black family. It also raises a crucial question: how is this experience different, and how does it remain universal?"

The actor added: "Unfortunately, mental health will remain a major concern. And given what we're going through today, more people will be affected."

This revival adopts a color-conscious perspective, placing a Black family at the heart of the plot. A contemporary interpretation that offers a fresh look at this classic of American theater, incorporating questions of representation, identity, and diversity.

The play will run at the Booth Theatre for a limited four-month run, with an official premiere scheduled for April 16. "Proof" also has the support of Higher Ground, Barack and Michelle Obama's production company.
