DRC: Fervor in Goma after the Leopards qualify for the 2026 World Cup

The city of Goma erupted at the final whistle of the match between the DRC and Jamaica .

Thanks to a decisive goal from Axel Tuanzebe in the 100th minute, the Leopards won the victory (1-0) and secured their qualification for the 2026 World Cup, becoming the 47th qualified team and the 10th African nation to obtain their ticket to the World Cup.

In a city marked by security challenges, the Leopards' qualification offered a moment of respite and unforgettable jubilation. The streets of Goma were transformed into a huge party, where supporters, overwhelmed with emotion, celebrated this historic victory.

In Goma, we're going through some very difficult times, but the Leopards have just erased everything. We're so happy… I've even lost my voice, the emotion is so strong, said Mélisse Bitwenge, a supporter.

The party lasted all night in the city's bars and lively venues. For the first time since 1974, when the country was still called Zaire, the DRC is once again participating in the world's biggest football competition.

Christian Mihigo, a supporter, expressed his pride: " This is a historic day. We are filled with joy. After 52 years, this qualification is exceptional. Our parents were the last to see our country in the World Cup, but today it is our turn to experience this history and pass it on to our children."

With this victory in the intercontinental playoff at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, the Democratic Republic of Congo joins Colombia, Portugal, and Uzbekistan in Group K of the 2026 World Cup. A new chapter in Congolese football history is being written, and the fans are already eager to experience this adventure together.
