Holy Thursday: Pope Leo XIV warns against the "thirst for domination"

While celebrating the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV warned against the abuse of power and the thirst for domination.

The initiative comes as part of Holy Week, celebrated by Christians against the backdrop of the war that has been tearing the Middle East apart since February 28. The Pope also called for unity and peace "in this dark hour of history," he declared.

On Thursday, huge vats of oil were brought into the central aisle of St. Peter's Basilica for Pope Leo XIV to blow on and bless.

In the Catholic tradition, this mass is an opportunity to bless the oils. They will be used for baptisms, communions, confirmations and the anointing of the sick throughout the year.

On Friday, the Pope is to preside over the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum in Rome, commemorating the Passion and crucifixion of Christ. The Easter Vigil will take place on Saturday.
