Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of tooth decay in children, as it weakens the protective properties of saliva and promotes inflammation in the body.
Researchers from the Faculty of Dentistry at King Abdulaziz University have found that exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of tooth decay in children, according to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Oral Health.
The study involved 427 children, with researchers assessing how often they inhaled tobacco smoke at home, in the car, or during family gatherings. The results showed that more than half of the children lived in homes with smoking adults, and those exposed to secondhand smoke were more likely to develop tooth decay.
The analysis revealed a clear relationship between the severity of exposure to secondhand smoke and the severity of tooth decay; children not exposed to smoke had the lowest rates of decay, while the highest rates were among those exposed to smoke at home, in the car, and at family gatherings.
The researchers explained that tobacco smoke can alter the composition and properties of saliva, impairing its flow and its ability to neutralize acids, thus facilitating demineralization of tooth enamel and the development of cavities. Children exposed to secondhand smoke also suffer from greater tartar buildup and gingivitis due to the formation of altered bacterial plaque and weakened local immunity in the mouth, including reduced secretory immunoglobulin A activity.
The researchers also pointed out that behavioral factors may increase the risk of tooth decay, as families in which adults smoke are associated with unhealthy eating habits and a high body mass index in children, which contributes to worsening dental problems.
