Mali: End of the standoff with the Canadian company Barrick Mining

Mali and Barrick have reached an agreement regarding the Loulo and Gounkoto gold mines. The settlement was announced Monday by the Canadian mining company.

The document stipulates that Barrick will pay $430 million to the Malian government. An advance payment is due six days after the agreement is signed. For its part, Mali agrees to drop all charges against the company, its subsidiaries, and its employees.

Bamako must also return the Loulo-Gounkoto mining complex to the mining company. A return to normalcy is on the horizon between Bamako and this mining partner.

A de-escalation after two years of tensions. Between the seizure of at least 3 tonnes of Barrick gold worth $250 million in January by local authorities and the temporary suspension of production by the Canadians.
