Nigeria: Worshippers reenact the Passion of

Worshippers carrying wooden crosses and dressed in biblical costumes walked through several Lagos neighborhoods, including Yaba and Ikeja, on April 3, pausing to pray and reflect on the final hours of Jesus Christ. This annual ritual is widely observed throughout the country, but this year many participants felt it resonated particularly strongly as households struggled with soaring prices, job insecurity, and recurring violence. In Nigeria, Good Friday is a public holiday and one of the most prominent moments in the Christian calendar. In Lagos, where inflation, transportation costs, and rising prices weigh heavily on households, many worshippers see the Passion of Christ as a reflection of their own daily struggles, caught between faith and economic hardship. Nigeria has one of the largest Christian populations in Africa, and Easter processions regularly draw huge crowds. This year, however, the message heard in the streets was not only about sacrifice and redemption, but also about the country's ability to withstand constant economic pressure.
