Turkish MPs call for Israel's "observer" status at the Council of Europe to be revoked due to its death penalty law

These calls came during a session held on Wednesday in Strasbourg, where the Assembly approved a draft resolution entitled "Towards the universal abolition of the death penalty in all circumstances," by a majority of 102 votes to 6, with 7 members abstaining.

During the session, Turkish MP Murat Cengiz condemned the Israeli law, considering it a "dangerous and discriminatory" step that undermines human dignity and the rule of law, and poses a threat to the international order.

Ginger also called for the cancellation of Israel's "observer member" status within the Assembly, stressing that the adoption of the death penalty reflects a "moral collapse".

For his part, Turkish MP Abdurrahman Babacan said that Israel, as an observer state in the Assembly, is required to respect human rights, considering that the application of the death penalty in the occupied Palestinian territories is a serious violation of international law, and calling for pressure to end this status.

For her part, Turkish MP Pelin Yelik pointed to the continuation of Israeli attacks on Gaza despite the ceasefire declaration, noting that the death penalty law is applied exclusively to Palestinians, raising concerns about discrimination and inequality before the law.

On March 30, the Israeli Knesset passed a law allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners by a vote of 62 to 48, with one abstention, amid support from right-wing parties. The law applies to those accused of deliberately killing Israelis, a number that currently stands at 117 prisoners.

More than 9,600 Palestinian prisoners, including children and women, are held in Israeli prisons, suffering from torture, starvation, and medical neglect, which has led to the deaths of dozens of them, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations.
