Palestine called on the international community to recognize the 1948 Nakba as a “crime of ethnic cleansing” committed by Israel against the Palestinians, stressing that the Nakba “is still ongoing.”
This came in a statement issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Thursday evening, on the eve of the anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, which falls on May 15th of each year.
The ministry called for the Nakba to be considered a “crime of ethnic cleansing,” and for action to be taken to “redress its harm and achieve the legitimate and inalienable rights” of the Palestinian people.
She stressed that these legitimate rights include “self-determination and independence for the State of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, and the return and compensation of refugees, starting with ending the long-standing Israeli colonial occupation.”
Palestinians refer to the displacement of 957,000 Palestinians out of 1.4 million who lived in about 1,300 villages and towns in 1948, coinciding with the establishment of Israel on Palestinian lands, as the “Nakba,” according to data from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
The ministry reminded the international community of its responsibilities “and the importance of doing justice to the Palestinian people and holding accountable those who committed crimes against them, including recognizing the Nakba as a crime against humanity that cannot be denied, justified, or defended under any pretext or excuse.”
