Eight people suspected of being perpetrators of the destruction of the Sungguminasa Narcotics Penitentiary , Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, have been arrested by the Bontomarannu Police.
"The eight provocateurs of the action were immediately taken to the police station. A search and examination were carried out, two of the eight people tested positive for drug use," said Directorate General of Corrections spokesperson Rika Aprianti.
The destruction of Sungguminasa Prison occurred when a crowd of around 40 people calling themselves the Alliance of Legal Observers (AMPH) demonstrated inside the prison.p
The demonstration carried out by AMPH did not have a permit or notification from the police, either from the Gowa Police or the Bontomarannu Police.
Rika said the protesters carried out acts of vandalism, starting from deliberately crashing their motorbikes into the P2U door, throwing glass, destroying visiting facilities for inmates and several other prison facilities, and even burning tires.
"The demonstration caused damage to several facilities and infrastructure," she said.
The protesters, Rika said, also carried several sharp weapons such as daggers and bows. The action also caused fear and unrest among the community around the prison.
Regarding the incident, she said, the Head of Sunggumina Prison immediately coordinated and reported the incident, and coordinated with the Bontonarannu Police, Koramil 1409-03, while also requesting security assistance.
"The prison has coordinated with the Bontomarannu Police and also continues to open a discussion," Rika said.
