2026 World Cup standings: Norway and Argentina top the table

 



  The Norwegian and Argentinian national teams followed in the footsteps of other countries that opened the 2026 World Cup with wins, after they secured three points in their match on Wednesday WIB.

Marking their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence, Norway finished top of Group I with three points.

These three points came from a 4-1 victory over Iraq, who were also returning to the World Cup after a 40-year absence, at Boston Stadium, Foxborough.

Norwegian star Erling Haaland marked his World Cup debut with two goals (29', 43'), while Leo Ostigard (76') and Aymen Hussein scored an own goal (90+6'). Iraq's only goal came from Hussein (39') as they briefly equalized at 1-1.

This victory took them to three points at the top of Group I, ahead of France on goal difference, who secured a 3-1 victory over Senegal with Kylian Mbappe as the star, scoring two goals.
