Renowned artist Robert Wayland has filed a lawsuit against FIFA demanding huge compensation after the removal of one of his most prominent murals in Dallas, which had been a landmark in the city for decades.
The case revolves around a mural called "Whale Hunting Wall 82," which adorned the facade of a central building in Dallas for more than thirty years. This artwork was removed as part of the urban redevelopment the city is undergoing in preparation for hosting the 2026 World Cup.
Wayland believes that the destruction of the mural, which was carried out without his prior consent, constitutes a flagrant violation of his intellectual and moral property rights guaranteed by law.
Wayland is seeking compensation of up to $25 million.
Wayland's legal argument is based on the 'Visual Artists' Rights Protection Act' (VARA), a federal law that protects works of art with recognized status from defacement or destruction.
The artist's legal team asserts that the mural was not merely paint on a wall, but an independent artistic entity entitled to special legal protection.
Robert Wayland is a pioneer in environmental art, renowned for his global mural series aimed at raising awareness about ocean conservation. The Dallas mural was the 82nd in this series, making its loss a significant blow to the artistic legacy the artist sought to document in various American cities.
