Novak Djokovic praised Serena Williams' decision to return to singles competition at the age of 44, playing at Wimbledon, which begins this week.
The 39-year-old Serbian tennis player called Serena, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, a hugely inspiring move.
"What she did was inspiring and epic. That's what I told her. I've always admired her career, her journey, her story. Of course, Venus too," Djokovic said in a pre-tournament press conference.
"To come back after so many years off the tour, after having two children, and to put in so much effort, not just for her own satisfaction or getting back on the tour, but also to give us all the pleasure of seeing her back on the court, both in singles and doubles, is truly incredible."
Djokovic and Serena Williams have a combined 47 major singles titles and are still competing against players from across generations. Their paths may be different, but both have built careers, set historic records, and continue to do so.
The latest chapter for Williams is her return to the tour after a four-year absence -- last playing singles at the 2022 US Open -- after becoming a mother of two daughters following the births of her children in 2017 and 2023.
