DRC: When the Ebola epidemic jeopardizes economic activity in Bunia

In Bunia, the epicenter of the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, few people want to take the risk of going out, for fear of catching the disease.

Although bars and clubs remain open, they are struggling to attract large crowds.

Staff are doing their best to contain the spread of the disease by installing handwashing stations and providing information about the disease.

Trésor Lumaya, manager of the Champagne Club, said there was "a significant loss of revenue" because of this virus.

The number of confirmed Ebola cases in Congo has risen to 782, with 181 deaths, the Congolese Ministry of Health said in a statement published on the social platform X on Sunday evening.

However, the number of cases in Congo is believed to be higher, as the outbreak was confirmed on May 15, several weeks after its presumed start, and the contact tracing coverage rate is 56%, which represents a sharp decline compared to last week.

In Bunia, a city of less than one million inhabitants, Ebola has already claimed dozens of victims.

A series of Ebola awareness campaigns have been launched, but many people still do not believe in the reality of the disease.

"Some families have already lost two, three, or even four members," explains Abdul Kasenda, a resident of the club.

"Those of us who are still alive must protect ourselves to avoid getting sick and to prevent the spread of the disease."
