The East Java Regional Police have tightened security for the commemoration of 1 Suro, or the Islamic New Year of 1 Muharram 1448 Hijri, in several cities/regencies by adding personnel and implementing a number of regulations to maintain public security and order.
"Personnel are on standby at the request of each Police Resort, including in Surabaya, which is one of the areas with quite high participant mobility," said Head of Public Relations of the East Java Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Jules Abraham Abast in Surabaya, Tuesday.
He said security would be enforced until the entire series of 1 Suro activities ended. Additional personnel were deployed to the police resorts according to the needs and level of vulnerability in each region.
According to him, security was not only focused on the Madiun Raya area, but also Greater Surabaya and a number of other areas that were expected to be points of mass movement during the series of Suroan activities.
In addition to strengthening security, the East Java Regional Police implemented a number of regulations for participants in the inauguration activities of martial arts schools.
Police appealed to participants and their companions to be prohibited from wearing attributes or sacred clothing of the schools when leaving or returning from the activity location.
The police also require participants to use closed four-wheeled vehicles without displaying any school attributes on the vehicles and prohibit convoys that could potentially disrupt public order and traffic flow.
Participants are also prohibited from carrying sticks, school flags, community attributes, and lighting firecrackers, fireworks, or flares.
Other prohibitions include provocative actions, spreading hoaxes and hate speech on social media, and consuming alcohol and illegal drugs during the event.
After the approval process is complete, participants are asked to immediately return to their homes and refrain from activities that could potentially trigger crowds or disrupt security.
"The public is asked not to be easily provoked by unverified information and to continue to obey traffic regulations while carrying out their activities," said Senior Commissioner Abast.
With the additional personnel and strengthened security, the East Java Regional Police hope that the entire series of 1 Suro commemorations in the local area will proceed safely, orderly, and not disrupt the activities of the public or road users.
