Italian company Eni announced that it has successfully started production from the gas compression project at the Sabratha platform in Libya, a strategic offshore development project aimed at increasing gas production.
The Italian group said in a statement published on Monday that the project had begun in cooperation with the Libyan National Oil Corporation, and that the project is a strategic offshore development aimed at maintaining and increasing production from the Bahr Essalam gas field, located about 100 kilometers off the Libyan coast.
The project included the installation of a new 1,600-ton compression unit on the Sabratha offshore platform, equipped with new compressors providing a total compression capacity of approximately 440 million standard cubic feet per day.
This new unit enables continued production even under low-pressure conditions, offsetting the natural decline in output from the Bahr Essalam field and maximizing gas recovery. The project is expected to contribute to an increase in gas production of approximately 800 million cubic meters per year, in addition to associated condensate.
This additional production will support electricity generation and enhance energy security in Libya, as well as continue to supply Italy with gas via the Greenstream pipeline across the Mediterranean.
The statement also noted that Eni and the Libyan National Oil Corporation are working on two other strategic projects in Libya:
The Bouri gas exploitation project: Connection and operation work is currently underway after the recent installation of a gas extraction unit in the Bouri field.
The A&E Structures Field Development Project: which is witnessing the ongoing development of two offshore gas fields.
It is worth noting that Eni has been active in Libya since 1959, and is currently working on three development projects with total investments of approximately $10 billion.
