ORI pays serious attention to fulfilling the protection standards for intern doctors

The Indonesian Ombudsman (ORI) is paying serious attention to the fulfillment of occupational protection and safety standards for medical interns, following the deaths of four medical interns in recent months.

Indonesian Ombudsman member Nuzran Joher said he had followed up on the Independent Investigation (IAPS) regarding the governance of the Indonesian Doctor Internship Program (PIDI).

"From June 9 to 12, 2026, the Main Assistance Team VII of the Indonesian Ombudsman was deployed simultaneously to collect data and conduct field inspections in two regions, namely Bali Province and Jambi Province," Nuzran said, as confirmed.

He explained that the investigation in Bali was focused on tracing the facts on the ground regarding the assignment of the late Dr. Edgar Bezaliel Hartanto to the Bhayangkara Hospital in Denpasar City.

Meanwhile, similar data collection was also conducted in Jambi Province to explore the work suitability aspects of the late Dr. Myta Aprilia Azmi at Wahana Hospital where she worked.

Nuzran stated that the direct inspection of the health service facilities  was aimed at mapping the actual conditions of implementation in the field and observing the alignment between technical regulations and the daily implementation of public services in hospitals.

In addition to Bali and Jambi, he added that field data collection would also be continued in a number of other areas that were recorded as having experienced similar incidents, namely in Rembang Regency.

"The field review focused on identifying any gaps between governance regulations and the actual workload of intern doctors in hospitals," he said.

The presence of the Indonesian Ombudsman in the field, including the planned coordination with the Provincial Health Office as an element of the Indonesian Medical Internship Committee (KIKI) at the regional level, he continued, was carried out to see the extent to which the functions of coaching, regular supervision, and health mitigation for internship program participants were running at the regional level.

Through the IAPS mechanism, Nuzran revealed that supervision remains directed at three main substances, namely the participant placement mechanism, compliance with the fulfillment of rights and obligations at the facility level, and the effectiveness of periodic supervision carried out by the Ministry of Health together with KIKI.

He hopes that the final results of this series of investigations can provide constructive input and solutions for improving the national health regulatory system.
