Senegal suffered a major blow in the 2026 World Cup, after it was confirmed that their first-choice goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, would miss the crucial match against Iraq in the third and final round of the group stage.
The Senegalese national team issued an official statement clarifying the latest developments regarding Mendy's condition, following the injury he sustained during the "Lions of Teranga" match against Norway in the second round of the group stage.
The match, which ended in a 2-3 defeat for Senegal, saw the coach forced to substitute Mendy in the 62nd minute.
The official Senegal national team account on the X platform said: "Following the left knee injury suffered by Edouard Mendy in the match against Norway, he will not be available for Senegal's next match (against Iraq next Friday)."
The statement added: "In-depth medical examinations will be conducted to assess the nature of his injury and determine his path back to participate in the tournament."
Senegal will play their final group stage match against Iraq next Friday evening, after both teams lost their matches against France and Norway.
