US President Donald Trump threatened Iran on Wednesday with a resumption of military operations if it does not abide by its commitments, two days before the expected signing of the agreement reached by the two countries to end the war in the Middle East.
“If they (the Iranians) don’t behave, we will go straight back to dropping bombs on their heads,” Trump said on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Trump stated that the memorandum of understanding with Iran is not final and does not include an immediate easing of sanctions on Tehran, adding that he will speak about this issue later.
According to leaked copies of the memo, Iran intends to take immediate steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, once a preliminary agreement is signed with the United States to end the war, at which point it will be allowed to sell its oil without restrictions.
According to leaks, the agreement, which is scheduled to be officially signed at a ceremony in Switzerland this Friday, stipulates that the United States will provide at least $300 billion for the reconstruction of Iran after the war. However, Trump has denied this .
One of the leaks suggests that America will work to end all US and UN sanctions imposed on Tehran if a final agreement is reached on the Iranian nuclear program.
The U.S. agreement – which includes allowing Iran to sell its oil freely, immediately, and offering to eventually lift all sanctions – represents major concessions that go beyond the terms of the nuclear agreement – the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – between Iran and world powers in 2015.
Trump unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 agreement during his first term, after describing it as “the worst deal ever.”
