Uzbekistan national team profile, World Cup debutants who broke the curse

The Uzbekistan national team will make history by appearing in the 2026 World Cup finals for the first time after overcoming the curse of a long journey filled with failure and disappointment.

The Central Asian nation finally secured its ticket to the 2026 World Cup after consistent performances throughout the Asian qualifying rounds.

A goalless draw against the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on June 5, 2025, proved decisive as they ended a nearly three-decade wait.

This success also erased the bitter memories of a number of previous failures.

In the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, Uzbekistan were controversially eliminated after their match against Bahrain had to be replayed due to a refereeing error and they eventually lost on away goals.

Eight years later, Uzbekistan again failed to reach the finals after losing on penalties to Jordan in the intercontinental playoff.

The defeat was one of the most painful moments in Uzbekistan's football history.

Now, the new generation of White Wolves has managed to do what their legends like Server Djeparov, Odil Ahmedov, and Ignatiy Nesterov could not.

Uzbekistan's young squad will be looking to make a strong first impression in their World Cup debut.
On the way to the final round, Uzbekistan showed impressive performance since the second round of Asian qualifying.

They qualified for the third round after winning four and drawing two, including two draws against Iran, one of Asia's major powers.

In the third round, Uzbekistan recorded three wins and one draw in their first four matches. Their only loss came in a 3-2 away defeat to Qatar.

After that, they went unbeaten in their next five matches to secure a historic ticket to the World Cup.
