| American author E. Jean Carroll & Donald Trump |
American author E. Jean Carroll received approximately $5.62 million from US President Donald Trump, in compliance with a court ruling in a civil sexual assault and defamation case.
According to documents published by international media, the amount includes $5 million in base compensation awarded by the jury in May 2023, in addition to more than $625,000 in legal interest accrued since the verdict.
The funds were released from accounts that had been held at the federal court treasury in Manhattan, after all legal avenues of appeal had been exhausted.
A nine-member jury had found Trump civilly liable for the sexual assault inside a Manhattan department store in the 1990s, and for later defaming the writer.
In a separate case, Trump faces an $83.3 million judgment in favor of Carroll in a second defamation lawsuit, which is still under review by a federal appeals court.
