EU foreign policy commissioner Kaja Kallas announced that EU countries have exempted the ban on fish imports from the latest package of sanctions against Russia due to its geopolitical importance.

"Firstly, regarding fish," Callas said at a press conference following a meeting of EU foreign ministers. "When I took on this role, I didn't know that fish had such geopolitical importance. Fish complicate many important geopolitical processes."

Callas's remarks came in response to a journalist's request to confirm information that the issue of a ban on Russian fish imports had been excluded from the talks.

European Union countries failed yesterday to reach an agreement on a new 21-point sanctions package against Russia.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated in June that the new sanctions package against Russia would include a complete ban on imports of a number of fish products.

Russia has repeatedly affirmed that it will withstand the sanctions pressure that the West began imposing on it several years ago, and which continues to escalate. Moscow has indicated that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of the sanctions imposed on Russia.
