Press reports indicate that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented US President Donald Trump with a gift: a custom-made, gold-plated pistol, during his visit to Ankara for the NATO summit.
Reports indicated that Erdogan presented similar pistols to the rest of the alliance leaders participating in the summit, but the version intended for Trump was the only one plated in gold.
She noted that the gift was a "Gumushay .357 Magnum" model, and it was presented inside a wooden box bearing the Turkish flag and the NATO logo.
The gift sparked widespread reactions among the participating leaders, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney jokingly saying that his gift of maple syrup seemed "modest" compared to Erdogan's, while Western officials noted that some of the pistols remained in Ankara due to legal restrictions related to arms transfers.
It was also reported that Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson would have the gifted weapon subject to the legal transfer procedures in place in his country.
