| US President Donald Trump attack on his political opponents |
US President Donald Trump launched a fierce attack on his political opponents, accusing them of seeking to destroy the country under the guise of "social democracy".
Trump said: "These are not social democrats, by the way. The beauty of it is that they say they are social democrats, but they are not socialists, they are communists. They want to destroy our country," stressing that he would not allow that to happen.
Trump's remarks come at a time when political rhetoric is escalating in the United States on the eve of the election cycle, as the Trump administration tries to portray some Democratic Party representatives as embracing a communist ideology, in an attempt to rally conservative voters and expand its electoral base.
During his speech at the Independence Day celebrations, Trump declared that he would "send the hammer and sickle to oblivion," a speech that resonated widely with his supporters but drew widespread criticism from Democrats who described the remarks as "intimidating" and "an attempt to distort political reality."
These statements come amid the continued use of the term "communism" by the US administration as a political weapon in its election campaigns, reminiscent of the Cold War era. US House Speaker Mike Johnson previously warned of the danger of "communists" coming to power, saying that "barbarians are at the gates."
It is worth noting that Trump, who is seeking a second term, faces fierce competition from the Democratic candidate who is seeking to exploit the divisions within the Republican Party, while Trump is betting on his hardline rhetoric and nationalist and populist tendencies that gained popularity among broad segments of voters during his previous term.
