A US official stated that the latest strikes launched by the United States against Iran on Tuesday evening were more powerful than previous strikes.
The official told NBC News that "this response is a direct result of Iran's acts of international terrorism against innocent ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz."
He added that "the Iranians know the consequences of their foolish actions, yet they chose to carry out those attacks."
The US Central Command had accused Iran of targeting three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, adding that this represented a violation of the memorandum of understanding reached earlier between Washington and Tehran.
