Dr. Anna Goftova, an internist, warned that yellow watermelon, despite its sweet taste, may not be suitable for everyone, stressing that consuming it may cause health complications in some groups.
She said: “During cases of acute pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, exacerbation of stomach ulcers, and inflammatory bowel diseases, it is advisable to completely refrain from eating yellow melon, because it contains a high percentage of water, sugars, and dietary fiber, which may increase fermentation processes in the intestines, causing bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Diabetics and chronic kidney patients should also be careful, especially if they are following a diet that limits the intake of potassium-rich foods.”
The doctor stressed the need to consult a doctor immediately if the health condition suddenly deteriorates after eating watermelon.
She noted that the safe amount of yellow watermelon, even for a healthy person, should not exceed 200 to 300 grams.
She added: “It is preferable to eat yellow watermelon as a snack between main meals, and in the first half of the day, because eating large quantities of it, especially in the evening, may cause a feeling of heaviness, increased gas, and discomfort. Also, cut watermelon should be kept refrigerated and consumed as soon as possible, to reduce the risk of bacterial growth and food poisoning.”
It also recommended that diabetics monitor their blood sugar levels after eating yellow watermelon, taking into account its glycemic index.
