The latest update to the FIFA rankings shows that Mostafa Shobeir, the goalkeeper of the Egyptian national team, has dropped one place in the list of the best goalkeepers during the 2026 World Cup.
Shobeir occupied the fifth position in the new ranking, after he was in the fourth position following the end of the Egyptian national team’s journey in the round of 16 against Argentina, despite the remarkable performance he presented with the “Pharaohs” in the tournament, while the Moroccan Yassine Bounou climbed six places at once to break into the golden square, benefiting from his distinguished level during the match against France in the quarter-finals.
According to FIFA data, Mostafa Shobeir scored 7.89 points in the goal defense index, compared to 4.73 points in the ball possession index, while Yassine Bounou outperformed him by scoring 8.04 points in the goal defense index and 5.24 points in the ball possession index, which gave him the advantage in the final ranking.
Despite dropping one place, Shobeir was one of the most prominent stars of the Egyptian national team in the tournament, after he delivered an exceptional performance against Argentina in the round of 16, during which he saved a penalty kick taken by the Argentine star Lionel Messi, and also saved his goal from several clear chances, and kept his net clean until the 80th minute, before the match ended with the Pharaohs exiting the tournament.
This ranking comes within the framework of the new system adopted by FIFA for the first time during the 2026 World Cup, which relies on the analysis of accurate data and statistics to evaluate the individual performance of players throughout the tournament.
FIFA explained that the evaluation of goalkeepers now depends on two main criteria; the first measures the goalkeeper’s performance when in possession of the ball, including the quality of passing, building the attack and contributing to possession, while the second measures the level of defense of the goal through saves, preventing goals and dealing with dangerous balls.
The new system aims to provide a more accurate and objective assessment of player performance, moving away from traditional impressions, by relying on advanced digital indicators that reflect various aspects of performance on the field.
