Indonesian men's singles star Alwi Farhan is aiming for his first BWF World Tour Super 750 title when he competes at the 2026 Japan Open in Tokyo, Japan, from July 14-19.
"Of course, I've never won a 750 title. I'm still very ambitious and hunting for a 750 title. But each round also has its own challenges, so I have to focus on game by game, " said Alwi when met at the PBSI Cipayung National Training.
Alwi came into the Japan Open on a positive note after winning the 2026 Australian Open Super 500. However, the 21-year-old admitted his physical condition had declined after competing in Australia.
"Thank God, the preparations are going pretty well. I've been feeling a bit sick since yesterday, possibly due to exhaustion, since returning from Australia. I'm still feeling some fatigue , but I'm making good progress, and I think I'm ready for the Japan Open and China Open," Alwi said.
In the opening round of the Japan Open, Alwi will face host Kenta Nishimoto, the men's singles player. This encounter with the senior Japanese player will be an early test for Alwi to maintain his momentum as he pursues a Super 750 title.
Alwi has faced Nishimoto twice and has yet to win. But this time, he comes with a different set of experiences and maturity.
"Because he's a senior player, we've met him a few times, but that was last year. I think Alwi is different now than he was last year. So I'll prepare myself and give my best performance," Alwi said.
