Alexandra Eala made history again for Philippine tennis after becoming the first female tennis player from her country to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament after coming back to defeat Maya Joint with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of Wimbledon.
The 21-year-old left-hander, currently ranked 32nd in the world, said the achievement was significant, not only because it was a milestone in his career but also for his country.
"It means a lot. It's incredible for me to be able to do this for my country. But every time I break a new milestone or make history, it's also very emotional because it's a personal goal and achievement," Eala said after the match, as quoted by the WTA.
He said the success was the result of the hard work he and his team had done over the years.
"This is something I've worked really hard for. My team has also worked really hard to achieve," Eala said.
"I'm so grateful to be able to share this moment with my country, but most of all I'm proud that all the hard work I've put in has finally paid off."
