Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan revealed that there are regular consultations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, covering all pressing regional issues.
“As you know, our president constantly consults with Mr. Putin, because our region is experiencing ongoing conflict in the Black Sea basin, which is important for us. The Caucasus is important for us, as are Central Asia and the Middle East. In all these regions, as well as in Africa and Libya, Turkey is implementing an effective foreign and economic policy,” Fidan said in an interview with CNN Türk.
Fidan explained that these regular, high-level contacts are intended to avoid the high cost of an escalation based on miscalculation.
He added: "If you don't know the other party's intentions, all plans are based on the worst-case scenario, which increases costs and fuels hostility. This becomes unproductive for us, and thus unnecessary conflicts arise."
Fidan's remarks come at a time when Turkey and Russia continue to coordinate their positions on hot issues. Presidents Putin and Erdogan had previously called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East, confirming their identical positions on the need to reach consensual peace agreements.
These consultations reflect Turkey's growing role as a regional mediator, with Ankara expressing its readiness to contribute to facilitating communication between Russia and Ukraine to pave the way for lasting peace. The Russian Foreign Ministry has also previously emphasized that regular communication between the two presidents plays a pivotal role in developing political dialogue between the two countries.
