French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the France-Spain match in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup will be preceded by a minute of silence, in remembrance of the victims of the terrorist attack in the French city of Nice.Macron explained, via his X account, that a minute of silence will be observed before the start of the match scheduled for Tuesday evening at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA, thanking FIFA President Gianni Infantino for responding to this request.
The day of the match coincides with the 10th anniversary of the attack that took place during the French National Day (Bastille Day) celebrations on July 14, 2016, when a truck driver plowed into a crowd of revelers on the promenade in Nice, killing 85 people and injuring hundreds.
The match between France and Spain, scheduled to kick off at 22:00 Mecca time, brings together two of the top contenders for the title, but this time it will begin with a moment of remembrance and tribute to the victims of one of the most tragic attacks in the history of France.
