Deputy Chairman of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sugiat Santoso, said that basic military training for participants of the Indonesian Development Driving Bachelor program for the Red and White Village/Sub-district Cooperative and Red and White Fishermen's Village programs must be evaluated, without eliminating the program's main objectives.
He also expressed his condolences for the deaths of several Latsarmil participants in the program. He stated that participant safety must be a top priority in every government program.
"The evaluation is to ensure improved safety standards, oversight, and governance of program implementation to prevent similar incidents from recurring," Sugiat said.
According to him, improvements are needed in all aspects of program implementation, from planning and implementation to the monitoring system. Every government program, he said, must be run professionally with strong standards, risk mitigation, and on-the-ground oversight.
"This needs to start with recording the condition of prospective participants before taking part in the activity," he said.
