Jordan announced on Thursday that it had intercepted eight missiles launched from Iran that penetrated the Kingdom’s airspace, as sirens sounded amid the military escalation between Washington and Tehran over the past two days.
The Jordanian army said in a statement: “We intercepted and shot down 8 missiles launched from Iran.”
The statement quoted a responsible military source in the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces as saying that Jordanian air defense systems intercepted and shot down eight missiles launched from Iran towards Jordanian territory on Thursday.
He explained that “the interception operations resulted in a number of shrapnel pieces falling, without any human casualties or material damage.”
For his part, Jordanian government spokesman and Minister of Government Communications, Mohammad Al-Momani, announced that the Jordanian army intercepted Iranian missiles that penetrated the Kingdom's airspace.
Al-Momani said that the sirens were activated by the Public Security Directorate a short while ago, after the Kingdom’s airspace was breached by missiles launched from Iran.
The spokesman confirmed that the missiles were dealt with and intercepted.
He added that “the valiant Jordanian Armed Forces are fully prepared to deal with any threat that the Kingdom may face, and will dedicate all their efforts to preserving the security of the homeland and the safety of citizens.”
He pointed out that “the relevant authorities will provide citizens and residents with the necessary guidelines and information, hoping that they will adhere to them and avoid spreading false news.”
In a related development, Egypt condemned “in the strongest terms the Iranian attacks that violated the airspace of the Kingdom of Jordan, which constitute a violation of its sovereignty, a dangerous escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region, and endangers the safety of civilians.”
Egypt, in a press statement issued Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed its complete rejection of any actions that infringe upon the sovereignty of Arab states or undermine their security and stability, stressing the need to respect international law and the principles of good neighborliness, and to stop all practices that would expand the circle of conflict in the region.
Egypt also renewed its full solidarity with Jordan and its support for all measures taken by Jordan to preserve its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This comes as Tehran resumes targeting American interests in the region following attacks carried out by Washington on Wednesday. The United States announced on Thursday that it had launched strikes against Iran for the second day, while Tehran said it had responded with missile attacks on American military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
