Indonesian women's singles player Putri Kusuma Wardani finally recorded her first victory over Wang Zhi Yi in their eighth meeting after eliminating the second seed from China in the quarterfinals of the BWF World Tour Super 750 Japan Open 2026.
Putri bounced back from an opening game defeat to defeat Wang in a three-game match with a score of 9-21, 21-17, 21-4 in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday.
"Thank God, I feel relieved to finally beat Wang Zhi Yi. Usually, I can only win one game at best and then lose in the deciding game against her, An Se Young, or Akane, but today I won, so I'm very happy," Putri said in an official PBSI statement after the match.
The victory felt special because Putri had always suffered defeat in her previous seven meetings against Wang.
